Episode 17 -- The Hammer of God: Chapter 1 Part 2

Episode Summary

We continue our study of Bo Giertz’s The Hammer of God as young Pastor Henrik Savonius is sent from the comfort of the deanery to the bedside of Johannes, a dying man whose troubled conscience cannot believe that God’s grace is for him. Savonius quickly discovers that he is in over his head. His learning and polished words are not enough for a terrified sinner. Help comes from the Lord through Katrina, a faithful peasant woman who opens the Scriptures and points Johannes away from himself and to Christ. In this episode, we reflect on repentance, faith, troubled consciences, absolution, the Lord’s Supper, the pastoral office, and Savonius’s own conversion into what he calls “a real pastor.”
