God's Peace

Episode 18 -- The Hammer of God: Chapter 2 Part 2 -- Awakened By the Law

Episode Summary

In this episode of God’s Peace, we continue through the first part of Bo Giertz’s The Hammer of God as Henrik Savonius travels with Pastor Linder to a house catechization. As the people gather around the Word and begin asking questions, Giertz takes us into some important questions about the Christian life: How much sorrow over sin is enough? What does repentance look like? What about restitution for past sins? Must a Christian give away everything he owns? How often should we receive the Lord’s Supper? And how can we know that God has called us when we don’t feel anything? We also look at Pietism and its influence on Lutheran Christianity, including some parallels with our own Laestadian heritage, the good gift of confession and absolution and the danger of making confession exacting. Finally, we look at the growing opposition to the awakening, and the dean challenges Savonius over Christian freedom, outward rules, and the danger of binding consciences where God has not bound them.
